Water Safety Month: A Must-Have Checklist for Bay Area Families & Nannies
Water Safety Month: A Must-Have Checklist for Bay Area Families & Nannies
Summer’s just around the corner, and with it comes pool days, beach trips, lake weekends, and plenty of splashy fun. But before we dive in, May is National Water Safety Month—a perfect reminder to slow down and make sure our little ones stay safe around water.
At Premier Nanny Source, we work with families across San Francisco, the East Bay, South Bay, and Peninsula, helping them find CPR-certified, full-time nannies who know how to keep kids safe while still making summer magical.
Why Water Safety Matters—Especially Around Here
In the Bay Area, we’re lucky to live near beautiful coastlines like Pacifica and Half Moon Bay, and many homes have pools or are close to lakes. But with all that access comes responsibility. Drowning remains the leading cause of injury-related death for children ages 1–4—and most of those tragedies are preventable.
That’s why we created this simple, essential water safety checklist for parents and nannies to use all summer long.
✅ The Water Safety Checklist for Families & Nannies
Supervision Rules
Always have a dedicated “Water Watcher” during swim time—no phones, no distractions.
For kids under 5, stay within arm’s reach—especially at places like Santa Cruz or Ocean Beach.
Don’t assume someone else is keeping an eye out. Make it clear who’s “on duty.”
Pool & Home Safety
If you have a home pool (common in the South Bay), install a self-closing gate with a latch.
Use a secure pool cover when not in use.
Remove toys and floats from the pool so kids aren’t tempted to reach for them.
Always drain kiddie pools, bathtubs, or buckets after use.
Bath Time Safety
Never leave your child alone in the tub—not even for a second.
Grab everything you need before filling the bath (soap, towel, toys).
Drain the tub right after bath time ends.
Open Water Tips (Beaches, Lakes, Etc.)
Use Coast Guard-approved life jackets—not floaties—for lakes or beach days.
Be aware of sudden drop-offs, tides, and strong currents.
No diving unless you know the water is deep and safe.
Emergency Prep
Make sure your nanny (or anyone watching your child) is CPR certified. All of our nannies are.
Know your exact address (and nearby cross streets) in case you need to call 911.
Keep emergency numbers visible near pools, tubs, or outdoor water sources.
Bonus Tips for a Safe + Fun Summer
Start swim lessons early—check out places like the YMCA, JCC, or local favorites. We love Aquatech in Alameda (they also have a location in Concord!).
Set clear, kid-friendly rules like “Ask before getting in the water” and “No running near the pool.”
If you’re traveling this summer, walk your nanny through your water safety plan before you go.
Why a CPR-Certified Nanny Makes All the Difference
Whether it’s summer vacation or just a Saturday in the backyard, having a nanny who’s trained in water safety can bring a whole new level of peace of mind. Our nannies aren’t just warm and reliable—they’re also equipped with the tools and training to step in if something goes wrong.
